Chua Chu Kang GRC unveils S$385m upgrading works under Master Plan
JUST a day before Nomination Day, the Chua Chu Kang Group Representation Constituency (GRC) on Monday unveiled its Master Plan for the next five years, saying that residents will benefit from S$385 million worth of upgrading projects.
These upgrading projects are undertaken by the Chua Chu Kang Town Council, Housing and Development Board (HDB), Land Transport Authority (LTA), NParks and various agencies.
They aim to provide better access to public transport with covered linkways and cycling paths; new spaces and upgrading facilities for community activities; and programmes and activities for all generations.
For instance, the Walk2Ride (ie, building more sheltered linkways near transport nodes, literally for commuters who walk to their rides) and intra-town cycling paths are two initiatives that will improve connectivity.
Sheltered linkways will be built within a 200-metre radius of the LRT and a 400-metre radius of the MRT. A network of cycling paths, totalling about six kilometres, will be built. More bicycle racks will also be installed town-wide. NParks was also involved in the recent major upgrading of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserves and Choa Chu Kang Park.
People's Association has completed upgrading works for Chua Chu Kang, Nanyang, and Yew Tee Community Clubs; the new Bukit Gombak and Keat Hong Community Clubs will be completed by 2016.
New MRT stations at Ten Mile Junction and Hillview, now under Stage 2 of the Downtown Line, will start operations on Dec 27, 2015. The Line will benefit those living in north-western Singapore and save travel time by up to 30 per cent. The Home Improvement Programme (HIP) will continue to enhance flats that were built before 1986. Blocks totalling 3,944 households will be upgraded, while others totalling 5,828 households will see their common areas improved under the Neighbourhood Renewal Programmes (NRP) in Bukit Batok, Jurong West and Choa Chu Kang.
"Older housing estates need to be regularly rejuvenated to enhance their asset value," the town council said. A total of 132 lifts will also be undergoing the Selective Lift Replacement Programme in the next two years, with more lifts expected to qualify in the near future. In a move towards eco solutions, the second batch of energy-saving LED lights will also be installed by 2016. A total of seven solar voltaic panels have been installed in the estates, with another 40 blocks in the pipeline.
Chua Chu Kang Town Council has been working in consultation with the Ministry of National Development, various agencies and grassroots leaders in drawing up the Master Plan, but it said the Plan will also be open for public viewing and feedback gathering before any major decisions are taken.
On Nomination Day on Tuesday, the People's Action Party is expected to field its team led by Health Minister Gan Kim Yong. The team also comprises Parliamentary Secretary of Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and Ministry of Social and Family Development, Low Yen Ling; director, Asean accounts & business development at Ernst & Young, Zaqy Mohamad; and head of catalist at CIMB Bank Singapore, Yee Chia Hsing.
On the opposition side, the newly formed People's Power Party led by opposition veteran Goh Meng Seng is expected to lead a team to contest.
