BERNARD Chew is chief information officer (CIO) of NTUC FairPrice and heads the Co-operative's information technology division. He is responsible for formulating IT strategy and policies, governance and control over how information assets are deployed and used, and ensures smooth and efficient execution of technology programmes. At the same time, he ensures that IT plans and policies are aligned with the organisation's vision, business needs and values.
In his role as CIO, Mr Chew oversees all technology programme implementations including point of sales systems, eCommerce portals, mobile applications, enterprise resource planning, supply chain management systems, store management solutions and office administration systems for finance and human resource.
He provides leadership to the large multicultural and diverse group of IT professionals in FairPrice and ensures that the team functions as a cohesive unit to manage, operate and support IT assets and programmes effectively.
Over the past 13 years in this role at FairPrice, Mr Chew has been instrumental in rolling out innovative retail technology solutions that have benefited both staff and customers. This includes pioneering the integration of payment terminals to point of sales system in Singapore and overseeing the largest self-checkout deployment in South-east Asia, automated self-service technology using handheld scanners which has led FairPrice to achieve industry awards for the innovative use of mobile phones for online ordering.
Mr Chew is an alumnus of Oxford University, where he graduated with an upper second-class honours in physics, as well as Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. Prior to joining NTUC FairPrice, he held positions in the public service as well as private companies.
