Frontline staff on MD's advisory board

FEDEX has a unique way of staff engagement: the managing director's advisory board is made up of frontline staff. This way the staff is able to contribute to the company's operations by making valuable suggestions and this helps the company to enhance customer satisfaction.

"The MD Advisory Board is a tool we have employed over the last three years to help senior management connect with our team members. Each month we hold a two-hour meeting with frontline staff and functional representatives who are nominated to be part of the board to engage in candid dialogue with senior leadership," says Khoo Seng Thiam, managing director, FedEx Express Singapore, who participated in the panel discussion after the release of the CSISG report.

These sessions are opportunities for FedEx to gain a sharper perspective on matters that impact its workforce. These efforts were recently recognised by the Aon Best Employers - Singapore 2016 programme that awarded FedEx Singapore with a Special Recognition for Commitment to Engagement.

"At FedEx, we place great emphasis on developing talent from within. In fact over 75 per cent of our directors and managers in Asia-Pacific have progressed through the ranks," says Mr Khoo.

"We take pride in offering our team members ongoing opportunities to enhance their skills and grow on the job. FedEx has in-house programmes that provide management-ready coaching and training. For example, our AiM programme - Advance into Management - is dedicated pre-management training that provides all employees with the opportunity to advance into management. Another is FedEx Excel Drive Leadership, which is a programme for high-potential leaders," he adds.

Staff can also make use of the company's tuition assistance programme to pursue higher learning that will further enhance their ability to perform their roles. On the other hand, employees who want to grow their careers by branching out to another function within FedEx can file a Job Change Application (JCA).

Says Mr Khoo: "Our main focus day-to-day is the delivery of outstanding service to customers.
