Van Gogh Lovers' Lane scene sells for US$66.3 million at Sotheby's
[NEWYORK] Vincent Van Gogh's "L'Allee Des Alyscamps" sold for US$66.3 million at Sotheby's in New York to a private collector from Asia.
The vibrant autumnal view of a tree-lined lovers' lane in Arles, estimated to fetch more than US$40 million, had at least three bidders chasing it. The work was painted in 1888, shortly after the artist moved to the south of France and was working alongside Paul Gauguin.
Van Gogh's auction record of US$82.5 million has been unchallenged since "Portrait du Dr. Gachet" sold 25 years ago at Christie's in New York.
The highest recent price was achieved at Sotheby's in November when an 1890 still life sold for $61.8 million. The buyer of "Still Life, Vase With Daisies and Poppies" was Wang Zhongjun, chairman of Beijing-based Huayi Brothers Media Corp. that produces and distributes movies in China, according to Sotheby's.
Sotheby's Impressionist and modern art evening sale is continuing.
