The annual Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles picks its Top 10
Jun 18, 2016 5:50 AM

THE annual E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) video games convention in Los Angeles wrapped this week, offering gamers a closer look at upcoming game titles in development, and some that are about to hit the market.

Game announcements started coming out as early as last Sunday, and Microsoft set the tone on Monday morning, when it announced that it would be launching two new, more powerful Xbox One game consoles in the next two years.

But Sony stole the show a mere eight hours later, when it unleashed a flurry of game announcements that included remasters of classic games such as Crash Bandicoot, new virtual reality titles such as Star Wars Battlefront: X-Wing VR Mission, and exclusive titles and sequels from well known brands, such as noted game creator Hideo Kojima, and the hit God of War series.

Here are the 10 top games announced at E3 2016.

Market voices on:

Batman: Arkham VR

Release Date: October 2016

Format: PlayStation 4 Exclusive

Slip into the cowl of the world's greatest detective, as developer Rocksteady Studios replaces the fast-paced combat of its Batman: Arkham series of action games with something more cerebral. Through the PlayStation VR headset, players get to proudly announce: "I'm Batman", as they become the superhero and see the world through his eyes, and navigate the brutal underbelly of Gotham City, investigating crimes scenes and analysing clues, just as The Dark Knight would.

In the E3 demo, players got a chance to even put on the Batsuit, and test out the various Batgear. Cowl? Check. Batarangs? Check. A raspy growl as the voice of Batman? That is all up to the player.

Battlefield 1

Release Date: Oct 21, 2016

Format: PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC

While this is the fourteenth instalment of EA's Battlefield series, Battlefield 1 gets its name from World War I, which is considered to be the first global field of battle. This first-person shooter is inspired by real world events, and players duke it out in multiplayer mode, as they handle bolt-action rifles, flame-throwers and even mustard gas, to try to turn the tides of war.

In the E3 demo, groups of players were thrown into a multiplayer game of capturing objectives in a map. Players could choose to be soldiers rushing across the dense battlefield, or be a gunner inside a vehicle, assisting group troops in their assault.

Days Gone

Release Date: To be confirmed

Format: PlayStation 4 Exclusive

No one ever said that zombies had to be slow, grotesque creatures limping at you, and if the sprinters from outbreak film World War Z are any indicators, Days Gone wants to fill players with the same intense dread, of being overwhelmed into submission. In this post-apocalyptic action title, the Freakers are looking for fresh meat and will willingly jump onto each other, to get to any human survivors.

In the live gameplay demo at the Sony press conference, audiences saw game character Deacon attempt to escape, as dozens of Freakers run towards him from all sides. In the beginning, it looked as if Deacon was doing reasonably well at shooting the undead, but pretty soon, he was overwhelmed and his only means of escape was to deploy delaying tactics. He blasted oil drums to cause explosions, and even took out the floor to slow down the terrifying horde that was gaining on him. Eventually, he even had to destroy a bridge that he was running on, to stop the waves of Freakers descending onto his position.

Death Stranding

Release Date: To be confirmed

Format: PlayStation 4 Exclusive

Welcome to the second collaboration between famed game creator Hideo Kojima and The Walking Dead star, Norman Reedus, and the first result of their team-up. The reason Death Stranding received a rousing round of applause at Sony's E3 press event was because the duo were previously tied to the survival horror sequel, Silent Hills, which was then abruptly cancelled last year (2015).

Though only a trailer for Death Stranding was shown, the use of the song, I'll Keep Coming, by Icelandic band Low Roar, together with the imagery of a baby, linked by a mechanical umbilical cord to Reedus, piqued the interest of gamers, who have longed held Kojima's Metal Gear Solid franchise as the gold standard when it comes to originality and quality in a video game.

God of War

Release Date: To be confirmed

Format: PlayStation 4 Exclusive

Kratos is back. The Spartan warrior, who took down the entire pantheon of Greek Gods across seven God of War games, returns in a soft reboot of the series that now pits him against the deities of Norse mythology. The reboot brings about several notable changes to the series, including a more role-playing gameplay element, and a change in weapons, since Kratos lost his dual blades at the end of God of War III.

The talent behind Kratos is also new, as Christopher Judge, of TV's Stargate SG-1 fame, is the new voice actor behind the iconic anti-hero. The biggest change though, is the addition of secondary characterisation that players get to control - the unnamed son of Kratos.

Resident Evil 7

Release Date: Jan 24, 2017

Format: PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC

At last year's local GameStart video game convention, lucky attendees at the Sony booth got to try out Kitchen, an absurdly named virtual reality horror game demo that saw a horrific creature attack the player, in a dilapidated kitchen. At E3, Sony, together with Capcom, finally tied Kitchen to Capcom's well regarded horror series, Resident Evil.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard returns the game to its horror roots, and it will be the first in the series where the game is played from a first-person perspective. While the game will be available across various platforms, PlayStation Plus subscribers can download the Resident Evil 7 Teaser: Beginning Hour demo right now, to scare themselves silly today.

Sea Of Thieves

Release Date: To be confirmed

Format: Xbox One and PC

Where this game is going, players do not need roads. The open seas are rich for the taking, as players take on roles on board pirate ships. They plunder trading vessels in the vicinity, and battle other pirate ships (and players) who make the mistake of cutting across their sails.

The online multiplayer game from Rare is a cross between a multiplayer action game and a simulation game that will see players take on quests and search for lost treasure, with, and against their friends.

Spider-Man

Release Date: To be confirmed

Format: PlayStation 4 Exclusive

In the movies, Marvel Comics trumps rival DC Comics, but in video games, DC Comics has the lead with its popular Injustice and Batman: Arkham franchise. This looks to change with the upcoming Spider-Man title from Insomniac Games. Very little is known about the game, other than the fact that Spidey dons a new costume, complete with a giant white spider as a logo on his chest.

But given the proven track record of Insomniac Games, which includes the hit Ratchet & Clank series for PlayStation, and Sunset Overdrive for the Xbox One, the adventures of an adult Peter Parker looks to be a good starting point. Long-time fans can also relish in the fact that this upcoming game deviates from the character's depiction as a teenager in all the movies, so they get to play Spidey as a seasoned hero.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew

Release Date: Fall 2016

Format: PlayStation 4 and PC

(Oculus Rift and HTC Vive)

Games have long allowed players to pilot a spaceship, but this upcoming VR game now gives players, and fans of Star Trek, the ability to command a Federation starship. Through the headgear, four players can team up to take on the key roles of Engineering, Tactical, Helm, or the hot seat itself, as Captain, of a ship in deep space.

The great thing about the game, other than being in command, is that the four players get to talk to each other, give orders, offer feedback and work together in real time as a team. The only issue though, is wondering if you have three friends willing to buy the hardware necessary, to turn this virtual adventure into a reality.

Watch Dogs 2

Release Date: Nov 15, 2016

Format: PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC

In the futuristic city of San Francisco where an advanced surveillance system monitors everyone in the city, players take on the role of hacker Marcus Holloway, a citizen who was previously framed for a crime by an earlier version of the monitoring system.

The open world game follows in the footsteps of the 2014 original hit title, which allows players to manipulate electronics, such as traffic lights, cars, cameras and other machines, to aid in their quest. For a bigger challenge, try to complete the game in non-lethal mode, where no one is killed, and not a single shot is fired by the player.
