THE actual concert may be in December, but preparations and rehearsals for ChildAid 2013 have begun this week, and will be in full swing by late October.
Earlier this week, the vocalists selected for this year's ChildAid had their first getting-to-know-you sessions which involved some vocal and movement exercises so that the programme could be put together, according to Jeremiah Choy of Orangedot Productions, who is also the three-time show director for the concert.
ChildAid 2013 is the ninth edition of this annual charity talent show, organised by The Straits Times and The Business Times to raise funds for The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund and The Business Times Budding Artists Fund (BT BAF).
Alvin Tay, organising chairman of this year's show and editor of The Business Times, says: "ChildAid is an annual concert with a heart. It's about caring for the less-privileged in our society as well as a showcase of excellence in the arts. Over the past eight years, I have been amazed by the constant stream of top class, young musical talents performing on the ChildAid stage."
"Artistic excellence notwithstanding, ChildAid's main objective is about youths and children making an impact on the lives of their less-privileged peers - a segment of the society that is the main focus of our two chosen charities," adds Mr Tay, who also chairs BT BAF.
Since its first edition in 2005, the annual ChildAid concerts have raised a total of $7.823 million. Last year's concert alone raised a record $2.016 million.
And according to Mr Choy, this year's concert is going to be more intimate, with just 150 or so performers compared with last year's 220. But it will be just as much fun, he promises.
This year's theme is Carnival, and there will be five segments altogether - Carousel, Hearts, Ferris Wheel, Masquerade and Finale.
Apart from the usual singing, dancing and music, this year's performances will also include gymnastics by CHIJ Kellock, circus acts from three schools and organisations, as well as circus performers from Jitterbugs Swingapore, Mr Choy reveals.
ChildAid 2013 will be held on Dec 6 and 7, at the Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands, which is the official venue partner for ChildAid 2012 to 2014. In addition to two evening concerts, there will also be a matinee show on Dec 7
