Sole Sisters

Long before we had grid girls at Formula One, Singapore had these girls.

Seen here getting fitted for free shoes, these are just two of the 20 'receptionists' specially picked to grace the Singapore Constitution Exposition - a month-long mega carnival to celebrate Singapore's self-governance and multicultural way of life. The girls wore new cheongsams and were ferried by boat from Clifford Pier to the twinkly lit fairgrounds of the old Kallang Airport, where they also played hosts to VIP guests.

Singaporeans got to watch performances, clamour for goodie bags, elbow each other for a glimpse of visiting Prince Philip and had the first look at the latest inventions of their time - fridges, freezers and dishwashers. Kind of like what we still do today - except that it's now called Comex or a Harvey Norman road show.

What we don't have anymore? The classy, sassy looks that these retro beauties captured best.
