WHEN the current world No 2 Tiger Woods has used a prototype of your putter design to win a number of his major victories, the present No 1 Rory McIlroy used it for a few years, and players such as Adam Scott, Geoff Ogilvy, Bill Haas and Ben Curtis carry one in their golf bags, it speaks volumes for the product.
Growing up in California, Don T "Scotty" Cameron, now 50, learnt the game of golf from his single-handicapper father. When not out on the fairways, they were in the garage tinkering with clubs, shaping heads, wrapping grips and creating new designs before testing them out. With the putter, the idea was when it's finished, it should look like it "melts into the ground".
One of the last things Scotty remembers his father telling him was, "stick with the game of golf, Scotty. I think you have a future."
An understatement if there was one. Over the past 20 years, more than 100 worldwide tournaments have been won by a player using a Scotty Cameron putter, and the past 15 years or so have seen more players on the PGA Tour using the Scotty Cameron Fine Milled putters, which have included the Studio Select®, California, Studio Select Kombi™, Newport and a number of limited releases.
The newest editions to his collection, which were released this week, are the mallet-style Select GoLo 5 and GoLo S5. These are another example of his commitment to working with the best players in the world and incorporating their feedback into his designs.
The Select GoLo 5 and GoLo S5 putters have a compact, elegantly rounded profile with select weighting technology for modern balance and stability and a Pistolero Grip. The head design is about 10 per cent smaller than the Select GoLo and GoLo S models, and the slightly asymmetric back profile with a pulled in heel and the contained cavity sight lines encourage a flowing stroke along the ideal arc. Two neck configurations - GoLo 5 with a single bend shaft and GoLo S5 with a straight, near centre shaft - provide options for appearance, dynamic feel and toe flow.
"Working with the best players in the world gives me incredible feedback," Mr Cameron says.
He adds: "The GoLo 5 and S5 are the results of that feedback for a slightly smaller head, but with the look, feel and performance of the incredibly popular GoLo.
"For many players the compact set-up instils the confidence and control to make a flowing stroke, and hole more putts."
The Scotty Cameron GoLo 5 and GoLo 5S are available now in Singapore with a suggested retail price of $645.
