A SUPERB final round score of 115 saw Team SunMoon once again topping the table of the 2013 Business Times Corporate Golf League. The defending champions brushed off any potential trophy suitors to record a splendid victory over six wonderful rounds on some of Singapore's finest golf courses. "It was wonderful that we were able to defend the title. Our team (both our employees and guests) this year had a great time meeting the other corporates again and we all truly enjoyed the great networking opportunity", says Gary Loh, deputy chairman of SunMoon Foods. He adds that there were plenty of highlights for him and the team over the course of the League, one of which was the team's enthusiasm in representing Team SunMoon. "It was wonderful to see the camaraderie among the players. This sense of pride extended even beyond the team and to the rest of our company, our business associates, our friends and family."
He continues: "This year's victory had a double meaning as it was also a celebration for SunMoon having recently completed a successful restructuring exercise. The corporate journey for SunMoon Food company was not easy but it's events like the BT Business Golf League that make our journey more enjoyable. It allowed us to take some time out to have some fun while still doing our job. It also allowed us to demonstrate part of our corporate ethos to work and play hard to strive for a balance in our lives and have the focus to face the many challenges and the many opportunities in the business world."
As to whether Team SunMoon will return to the League in 2014, Mr Loh answers: "We will return for sure as a sponsor. We will also have a little 'surprise' on the team composition. So we look forward to next year's BT corporate league!"
After tallying the final points, Team Citi finished in second place with 552. Ever consistent Park Hotel Group (who were fourth last year) finished in third, while SPH Sultans of Swing and Seagull Gayatri United rounded out the top five positions. In the category A division, Team UBS topped the ladder with 510, followed by Team Singapore Pools, Team Centurion, Team Emerio and Team Cerebos. Like the previous three years, the 2013 League, which was co-organised by Golf Digest Singapore, brought members of the business and corporate community together for six rounds of golf played on some of this country's finest courses. It attracted 18 teams (one non-competitive), who all had the opportunity to network, make new friends and catch up with old ones, and in the process have enormous fun.
And it could not have happened without the generous support of sponsors, in particular Audi Singapore who once again stepped up to the plate to be Presenting Sponsor. Park Hotel Group was once again Main Sponsor in addition to hole-in-one sponsors Audemars Piguet and World Golfers Championship Singapore. Also returning for the fourth year were Boustead, Centurion, Cerebos, Singapore Pools and Vertix. During the six rounds, there was flowing Foster's beer sponsored by 6 Drunk Men and wine courtesy of Profiters International.
This year there was a charity drive (ChildAid) in conjunction with Singapore Pools, Tote Board and Singapore Turf Club. ChildAid, now into its ninth year, is a charity concert featuring talents under the age of 19, and is in aid of The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund and The Business Times Budding Artists Fund.
The concert is a platform for young people who have excelled in their field to showcase their talent, be it in singing, playing a musical instrument or dancing. Some past performers who have showcased their talent on the ChildAid stage have won scholarships overseas to further hone their gift.
ChildAid 2013 is now into its ninth year and the final round's dinner saw ChildAid performers Howard and Cilla Chan performing some wonderful favourites. Howard is from the ChildAid 2011 alumni and Cilla is one of the 48 contestants in The Voice US Season 5 which premiered on Sept 29 on AXN. Cilla was born in Singapore, studied at the Singapore American School before graduating at Stanford University in June 2013.
In addition to the League's winners and sponsors, another award was given out - in the 2013/14 Singapore Golf Course Rankings and Guide that is featured in the September issue of Golf Digest Singapore, Sentosa Golf Club achieved a 5-Star ranking and Best Golf Course in Singapore for the Serapong course was picked up by Peter Downie, general manager and director of golf, Sentosa Golf Club.
