You are here
To suit every man
THERE'S really nothing worse than an ill-fitting suit and when yours has more creases than a Shar-Pei puppy, you know there's something seriously wrong. But instead of rushing out to buy one off-the-rack just because you remembered your niece's wedding is around the corner, why not invest in a made-to-measure one?
And while they say all worthwhile things take time, a made-to-measure suit by Tom Ford takes only six to eight weeks to make. Each is crafted over about 19 hours by a tailor or seamstress who follows a sequence of 150 steps like double-stitching lapel buttonholes so they never unravel and turning up trouser legs with two invisible buttons so that the cuff can be unfastened for cleaning.
Though the label is helmed by American fashion designer and filmmaker Tom Ford, its bespoke clothing is tailored in Europe. Hand-selected wool is spun into yarn on 18th-century English machines, wool-silk and wool-cashmere blends are made in Northern Italy, and the cloths are cut and sewn in small artisan factories located in Biella, Novara and Padova, also in Italy.
To ensure a creaseless quality, each suit has a canvas structure that acts as an anchor for the tailoring on top and five interior pockets that are built deep into the structure so technological gadgets carried by the wearer do not disrupt the lines of the garment.
Tom Ford flies in a made-to-measure specialist to Singapore from Italy three times a year; and a two-piece suit starts at S$6,000, while a shirt will cost upwards of S$1,200.
The overall cost will vary depending on the choice of fabric and other details including the types of lining of suits and buttons on shirts.
Following the initial fitting, the pieces will be tailored and customers are then invited back to the boutique for a second fitting to check if there are any minor adjustments required, which would, in turn, take less than a week.
