New 4G quality-of-service standards have been announced by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA).

NEW 4G quality-of-service standards have been announced by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA).

The IDA standards relate to mobile coverage in Singapore. Mobile network operators have to cover 95 per cent of outdoor areas from July. This will increase to at least 99 per cent a year later.

The new standards are similar to 3G standards that were enhanced in 2012. Both sets of standards will be imposed on the operators.

"Increasingly, 4G enabled phones have become more common, with more than half of the total mobile users turning to 4G networks for faster connectivity to meet their usage needs," IDA said.

"With the increasing adoption of 4G as the main form of communications, it is timely to implement standards to better protect consumers' interests."
