Private equity firms are increasingly taking over public services

Rural/Metro, long one of the US's largest ambulance companies and an operator of a private fire department, endangered the health of residents of a Tennessee county in the year since private equity led the firm into bankruptcy, according to the county.

SINCE the 2008 financial crisis, private equity firms, the "corporate raiders" of an earlier era, increasingly have taken over an array of civic and financial services that are central to everyday American life, according to a study by The New York Times.
