Just got back from the two-day Asia Data Bootcamp, organised by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore and the World Bank, and there's some really inspiring stuff being done out there by members of the public.
Taiwan's g0v.tw is really setting the standards in terms of what can be done. In Singapore, data enthusiasts can join DataScience.sg and find others who share the same interests. If you want to put your skills to use for good, there's also a DataKind chapter in Singapore. If you are interested in visualisations, here's a guy who quit his job to learn D3 for a year and has just started his own firm.
Had the privilege of watching some of these folks code, and it's truly breathtaking.
With open data only really hitting its stride in the past few years, a lot of the most interesting work in the field is coming out of enthusiasts and not corporations. Exciting times.
