Bird flu spreads across US, causes egg shortage

Food companies are either importing eggs from overseas or using alternatives such as plant-based egg substitutes

US farmers have been forced to kill almost 40 million chickens and other birds, causing egg prices to soar as a deadly version of the avian flu attacks the poultry industry.


AS a virulent avian influenza outbreak continues to spread across the Midwestern United States, some egg-dependent companies are contemplating drastic steps - importing eggs from overseas or looking to egg alternatives.
