GE2020: WP takes three constituencies; Pritam Singh says much work to do

THE Workers' Party took three constituencies that secured it 10 seats in Parliament in this year's general election.

WP, Singapore's de-facto Opposition party, clinched a new group representative constituency (GRC), Sengkang, and successfully defended their seats in Aljunied GRC and Hougang single member constituency (SMC).

"Today's results are positive but we have to hit the ground running...There's much work to do and I can assure you this Workers' Party team is committed to serve Singapore, to serve the voters who voted for us, and those who chose to vote for our opponents, equally, and faithfully," said WP's secretary-general Pritam Singh.

In a press conference on Saturday morning, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said he had called Mr Singh to congratulate him on his party's showing. He added to Mr Singh that with the WP winning 10 seats in Parliament, "it is right that he, the Workers' Party leader, be formally designated as the leader of the opposition". With this, Mr Singh will also be provided appropriate staff support and resources, Mr Lee said.

The WP took Sengkang GRC - a newly carved out constituency that comprised Punggol East Single Member Constituency (SMC), as well as parts of Sengkang West SMC and Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC. The WP team took 52.13 per cent of the votes, beating the PAP which garnered just 47.87 per cent of the vote.

In Hougang, the WP's Dennis Tan returned with 61.19 per cent of votes vs the PAP's Lee Hong Chuang, who took 38.81 per cent of the votes. The WP also defended their seats in Aljunied, taking 59.93 per cent of the votes.

The WP team in Aljunied comprises Pritam Singh, Sylvia Lim, Faisal Manap, Gerald Giam and Leon Perera, while PAP's line-up comprises Victor Lye, Shamsul Kamar, Alex Yeo, Chua Eng Leong and Chan Hui Yuh.

WP contested four GRCs and two SMCs. Besides contesting for seats in Aljunied GRC and Hougang SMC, WP fielded candidates to contest for Marine Parade GRC, Sengkang GRC, East Coast GRC and Punggol West SMC.
