Pilipinas Shell supports projects that are based on the needs of the local communities.

PILIPINAS SHELL is a Philippines-focused integrated downstream refining and marketing company. It focuses on turning crude oil into a range of refined products, which are moved and marketed for domestic, industrial and transport use. The petroleum giant is the winner of the Community Care Company of the Year award from the Asia Corporate Excellence & Sustainability Awards (ACES).

Chief executive officer of MORS Group, organiser of the ACES Awards, Shanggari Balakrishnan, says that the corporation is the living embodiment of the criteria for this award category.

"Of all the companies we audited, Pilipinas Shell was the one which was most clear about their community mission. The community and sustainability work it does is innovative and inspirational. Their outreach campaigns engage the public, generate positive brand communication, and exceeded our judging criteria."

Pilipinas Shell's longevity as a corporate entity, and its continued investment in the country and in the Filipino people, are testaments of the corporation's commitment to sustainability.

Sustainability is integral to every aspect of the business; therefore, Pilipinas Shell seeks to meet the energy needs of an ever-growing population in ways that respect people, maintain safety, and protect the environment.

"Beyond compliance or competitiveness, sustainability is a way of living out our corporate values and it is embedded in our Revised Manual on Corporate Governance. Adopting the Shell global framework, our approach to sustainability is integrated across our business operations at all levels. Being a good neighbour and sharing the responsibility of nation-building is part of sustaining our business in the long term," said Cesar G Romero, president and chief executive officer.

In order to do this, Pilipinas Shell helps to develop local economies by creating jobs, sourcing from local suppliers, and paying taxes. The company supports community projects that are based on the needs of the local communities.

Knowing that in the coming decades, more and cleaner energy will be needed for economic development in the face of growing environmental pressures, the company continues to contribute to the public dialogue on energy and climate policy. It also advocates that businesses, governments and civil society work together to better shape a more sustainable energy future.

Pilipinas Shell is an active founding member of the Global Compact Network Philippines (GCNP), the local entity of the United Nations (UN) Global Compact, which is the largest corporate sustainability initiative in the world.

Serving the community

Formed in 2000, the UN Global Compact seeks business solutions to sustainable development. It guides companies to do well by operating responsibly, taking bold actions, and bringing the voice of responsible business to dialogues with world leaders.

By actively participating in the GCNP, Pilipinas Shell not only strengthens its local affiliations, as well as gains access to tools and reports that it uses to better inform and fine-tune its own programmes.

The Country Social Performance (SP) Manager drives Pilipinas Shell's Social Performance direction, and ensures SP cohesion. She manages the social performance team and provides in-country strategic leadership on social investments. She also oversees development and implementation of the country social investment strategy, manages (exit, grow, develop, improve) the mix of national and local programmes, and provides strategic advice to the Country Chairman and senior management on social development programmes towards ensuring maximum Shell reputation benefits among stakeholders, media, and employees.

Pilipinas Shell's SP is guided by the SP Control Framework, which puts in place the required governance as well as defining roles and responsibilities.

Pilipinas Shell works closely with Pilipinas Shell Foundation Inc (PSFI), its social development arm, for its various corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes.

The partnership has proven to be very fruitful and has, under its belt, award-winning social development programmes of national and local scales including leadership enhancement and attitude development; technical, vocational and agricultural skills development, training and employment; healthcare and services, sanitation, and safety; livelihood and entrepreneurship development; and environmental stewardship.

In order for Pilipinas Shell to continuously operate critical economic assets, and deliver products and services that fuel the activities of its customers and the nation, it is key that the company attracts, motivates and retains the best Filipino talents.

The main components of Pilipinas Shell's Employee Value Proposition (EVP) are its brand and reputation; its corporate culture, which reflects its core values of honesty, integrity and respect for people; the opportunities for personal development and professional growth; and Pilipinas Shell's commitment to nation-building.

Pilipinas Shell encourages its employees to volunteer and use their skills to support social and environmental projects. It introduced an employee volunteerism programme called Shell ACTS (A Community That Serves).

The programme allows staff to participate in the various CSR activities as mentors for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)-related initiatives, or to participate at the grassroots level in the various communities that Pilipinas Shell supports.
