Going all out to save energy

OUTSTANDING Energy Services Provider of the Year award winner G-Energy Global Pte Ltd has helped achieve significant annual energy savings for its clients through its chilled water system retrofit projects.

While G-Energy has built a track record in chilled water system projects, it is expanding its range of services in the industrial sector to respond to the needs of customers by building internal capability. For example, in 2017, G-Energy was contracted by DNV GL to perform detailed energy audits for 10 compressed air systems, as part of a study on energy efficiency of common industrial equipment and systems (chilled water plant systems, compressed air systems, industrial boilers, pumps and fans) in Singapore that was commissioned by NEA.

An accredited energy service company (ESCO), G-Energy has built its credentials based on more than 600 successful commercial and industrial projects and the numerous prestigious awards the company has achieved since its incorporation in 2005.

The company has also strongly supported green energy capability building programmes in the environmental sustainability ecosystem by offering internship positions and scholarships for polytechnic students and university undergraduates as part of its contribution to grow awareness of the green and sustainability industry. G-Energy's directors and senior management staff are also lecturers in the area of energy usage, pattern monitoring and analysis in various local institutions.

G-Energy provides consultancy for building services projects in the following services: energy audit measurement/verification, remote monitoring services, environmental sustainability design, energy modelling, sun path, solar, daylight, glare, CFD & comfort analysis, energy consultancy, building information modelling, design & build/turnkey & retrofit projects.

Mr Low says G-Energy continues to push boundaries to raise energy management standards and is among the first to implement the following in air conditioning systems design: running high chilled water temperature; modifying AHU with pre-cool coil (no additional power needed) & VSD screw chillers; converting split units to chilled water system; Green Mark Platinum Building utilising incentives rolled out by Singapore BCA; using magnetic bearing chillers; design and use of water cooled vrv; changing high tension chiller gear to boost chiller efficiency and tonnage; and combining three plant rooms.

Highlighting some of the projects done by the company that contribute to energy efficiency, he cites the following:

  • Tuas Power Generation: Upgrading of building centralised air-con chiller plants. Validated annual electricity savings is 3,484,057.77 kWh.
  • SIA Training Centre: Replacement of chillers at Hangar 2 & Hangar 3 - the air handling units were modified where no additional power is needed and use of VSD Screw Chillers. Validated annual electricity savings is 647,592.62 kWh.
  • Singapore Aerospace Manufacturing Pte Ltd: Combining two chiller plants retrofit using high efficiency chillers. Validated annual electricity savings is 3,255,197.00 kWh.

Mr Low says that collectively, the annual energy savings for these three projects is 7,330,581 kWh (26 TJ) or enough electricity to power 15,600 households in Singapore for a year.

"Energy efficiency is the key to ensuring a safe, reliable, affordable and sustainable energy system for the future. It is the one energy resource that we can effectively acquire because it is the quickest and least costly way of addressing energy security, environmental and economic challenges," says Mr Low.

"It is G-Energy's strong conviction that we should fundamentally rethink energy efficiency and treat it as an energy source in its own right, representing the value of energy saved and direct our operations to ensure that energy efficiency and demand side response can compete on equal terms with generation capacity."

G-Energy desires to actively plug into the world's great climate energy transition towards a low carbon economy to provide a cleaner, more efficient and attractive way of consuming and living to fight global climate change, he adds.

Going forward, the company plans to move into the area of data analytics and digitisation in the energy efficiency design, implementation and performance maintenance. G-Energy's top priority core business has been in the incorporation of energy efficiency and sustainable green design features into new and existing buildings.

"We are of the view that energy efficiency can best be obtained using an integrated whole building process throughout the entire project development, which leads building designers to generate a large amount of data during energy simulations," says Mr Low.

"In view of this, we plan to grow to develop an energy efficient building design process using data mining technology which can help project teams discover important patterns to improve the building design, to extract interrelationships and patterns of interest from a large dataset. Case studies revealed that data mining based energy modelling helps project teams discover useful patterns to improve the energy efficiency of building design in all stages of the EE design, implementation and maintenance phase of the infrastructures."
