GUANGDONG wants the Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City project to help lift the province up the economic development ladder and to serve as a model for other Chinese cities to follow.

Expressing the twin goal in a half-hour meeting with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong here on Thursday evening, Guangdong Party Secretary Hu Chunhua said through a translator that Guangdong is also keen to learn from Singapore in reforming its economy.

Mr Lee, who is on an eight-day official visit to southern China and Hong Kong, replied that economic transformation is a never-ending exercise that can be painful. He related Singapore's experience, adding that the Republic would be happy to share its lessons with Guangdong.
