FOR the food and beverage (F&B) companies in Singapore, the two main challenges are manpower and rising rental costs. While productivity initiatives will not be able to eliminate their impact, it is important for companies to streamline their operations and equip staff with the necessary tools and systems to survive, according to Ang Kiam Meng, chief executive officer of Jumbo Group, which is one of the SPA winners this year.

"In Jumbo, we cope with our manpower challenges by leveraging IT solutions and continuously refining and improving our processes. And we maximised our returns on rental costs by investing in a central kitchen and automation to allow more revenue generating space at the outlets," says Mr Ang.

"In Singapore, resources are limited. Hence, it is important for companies to maximise returns on resources. To do so, raising productivity should be part of every business' strategy, as the productivity level of each company is what differentiates the winners from its peers."
