Saying no to deforestation

Wilmar International has been a major proponent of sustainability in the palm oil business

AS guardians of large tracts of plantations, Singapore-based agribusiness group Wilmar International has always been aware of its responsibility towards the environment. Moreover, as a significant employer in some of the most impoverished regions in South-east Asia and Africa, the company also understands the impact of its business on the livelihoods of its employees and the communities it operates in. Wilmar's business activities include oil palm cultivation, oilseed crushing, edible oils refining, sugar milling and refining, among others.

The company has been particularly supportive of sustainable palm oil production, and was one of the first palm oil companies to achieve RSPO certification in 2008. The certification is an industry-recognised assurance to the customer that the standard of palm oil production is sustainable.

Wilmar's ability to effectively communicate its sustainability efforts is particularly important, as the agribusiness industry's reputation has been tarnished by the unsustainable practices within the industry.
