Tokyo candy shop offers a sweet taste of the past

"I'm proud of preserving one element of the food culture of Edo," Mr Maruyama said.


THE sweet smell of sugar being boiled down filled the kitchen at the Umebachiya sweet shop in Sumida Ward, Tokyo. Owner Soichi Maruyama lifted vivid red cherry tomatoes out of a pot and carefully rolled them in sugar in a wooden box, soon turning the red tomatoes white.
