Corporate teams get free Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon Ekiden slots in exchange for fundraising commitment
The 2023 SCSM won the Best Sports Event of the Year at the Singapore Sports Awards
AS MANY as 100 slots in the Ekiden category of this year’s Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM) will be given out for free to corporate teams, if they commit to raise funds for the bank’s Futuremakers initiative.
Futuremakers empowers young women in need to gain skills and sustainable employment, as well as supports entrepreneurs to build successful micro-businesses and create jobs.
This year’s SCSM, which takes place over three days from Nov 29 to Dec 1, sees the return of the popular Ekiden Race for the first time since 2021.
The Ekiden is a relay race where teams of five runners take turns to complete various sections of the marathon route, passing a sash to the next runner at designated transition points. The complimentary slots will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis.
Public registration for the SCSM – the only World Athletics Gold Label race in South-east Asia – began on Tuesday (June 4).
The Kids Dash for participants aged 12 years and below takes place on the first day on Nov 29, followed by the 5 km and 10 km runs a day later. The half-marathon (21.1 km) and the full marathon (42.195 km) will flag off on Dec 1, with the Ekiden teams running alongside the marathoners.

Patrick Lee, the chief executive officer for Singapore and Asean at Standard Chartered, said that the bank has, through sports, helped to play an integral role in building social bonds and community resilience.
“This year, we are focused on giving back and making the marathon an even more inclusive event for our community, colleagues and clients,” he said.
At the annual Singapore Sports Awards on Monday night, last year’s SCSM was named the Best Sports Event of the Year in the community and mass participation category.
The event was attended by hundreds of guests including Singapore National Olympic Council president Grace Fu and Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong.
This is the sixth time that SCSM has claimed this accolade, having done so in 2013, 2017, 2018, 2020 and 2023.
More than 44,000 runners from over 70 countries took part in last year’s SCSM, including over 8,000 from overseas. Bahrain’s Rose Chelimo and David Barmasai Tumo from Kenya won the women’s and men’s marathon titles respectively.
