Lego brick and mortar

PLAYING with Lego bricks may be more for kids, but private tutor Gene Tan never grew out of it. Instead, he has turned it into a business of sorts.

Mr Tan is known in the local creative scene for building scenes of Singapore in the 1990s using Lego. Most of his creations can be seen on his Facebook page, My Little World. "I grew up in the 1990s, and want to preserve my memories this way," says Mr Tan, 36.

His creations caught the attention of Tyrwhitt General Company (TGC) who invited him to conduct Lego-building workshops. Mr Tan initially found the idea rather strange. "Lego is about playing, and I find it unusual that I had to teach people how to play," he says. Having played with Lego since he was a child, he is very familiar with the different types of bricks. "I was always making my own creations, rather than following instructions on the box."
