Heritage For A Good Cause
Sowing Room and Onlewo create a collection of Singapore-inspired lifestyle products that gives back.
What do Sowing Room, a social enterprise, and Mike Tay, a fabric designer, have in common? They are the makers behind a limited edition Singapore-themed collection of lifestyle products that gives back to society.
Available exclusively at The Social Space, a socially conscious multi-concept store at Kreta Ayer Road, the collection includes straw sleeves, table napkins, clutches and tote bags. Prices start from S$13.50 for a straw sleeve to S$59 for a tote bag.
Sowing Room helps at-risk foreign women who have been abused or exploited while working in Singapore, many of whom are now living in a shelter. The women are taught how to sew and are paid a fair wage for their work while waiting for their cases to be resolved. Most of the pieces from Sowing Room are created by upcycling past seasons' fabrics and textiles donated by various high-end fashion and design houses, which would otherwise end up as trash.
