What next for the Singapore Turf Club?

WHERE once tens of thousands of punters thronged the Singapore Turf Club (STC) to watch their favourite horses race the Kranji course, the stands have fallen silent. The glitz and glamour that accompanied marquee derby events has evaporated. No doubt racing resumed last year behind closed doors due to pandemic restrictions, and spectators could well soon return as curbs are slowly lifted.

But those in the racing fraternity report an exodus - of winning trainers, star jockeys and champion horses - out of Singapore in recent months. The sport of kings has fallen into decline here, with the racing business no longer viable for many stakeholders and the STC itself under financial stress.
