Global help needed to battle Ebola scourge

ON Aug 8, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the Ebola epidemic in West Africa as "a public health emergency of international concern". It also warned that the scourge could persist for six months to a year. If adequate steps are not taken to contain the epidemic, there is a risk that it could spread outside the areas where it is currently raging. This is a risk too serious to leave to chance.

Ebola, which has already claimed more than 1,200 lives, is incurable and can be deadly within days of being contracted. There are some experimental drugs for it, but these have not been tested or proven, and in any event, are not available in significant quantities.
