Trade's role in improving food and water use

OVER the past few years, a number of countries and cities were facing challenges with their water supply security - with quite different responses.

There is, for instance, the city state of Singapore, addressing the issue proactively as a long-term strategic challenge, taking a comprehensive view and providing sustainable, extremely well managed solutions.

Others go more for short-term action and re-action. In 2008, for instance, as the Spanish city of Barcelona ran dry, Marseille in neighbouring France rushed to import water to carry it through the hot summer months - 10 boatloads with 19,000 cubic metres of water each.
