JIMMY Carter, the 39th president of the United States who died on Dec 29 at age 100, remains one of those rare visionary leaders whose foresighted commitment to renewable energy and environmental stewardship was well ahead of its time. In an era when the global conversation on sustainability was still very much in its infancy, Carter’s progressive policies during his late-1970s presidency laid the groundwork for a transformative movement towards a greener future. His steadfast dedication to renewable energy and conservation reflected a profound understanding of the interconnectedness between economic vitality and ecological balance.

I had the privilege of interviewing former president Carter at his home in Plains, Georgia, in July 2001 during a fellowship for journalism faculty when I was an associate professor at a US university. During the interview, Carter shared his reflections on his groundbreaking initiatives and offered candid commentary on the challenges faced by subsequent administrations, including that of George HW Bush.

Carter’s insights underscored the importance of proactive leadership in addressing environmental and economic issues, offering timeless lessons that continue to resonate today.
