AS political strategists and pundits were discussing in late 2006 the shape of the 2008 American presidential campaign, they were still wondering who would be nominated the Republican presidential candidate.
But the consensus in Washington at that time was that former First Lady and then Senator, Hillary Clinton from New York, had a strong lock on the Democratic presidential nomination.
