Singapore’s Covid-19 situation stable but ‘stay vigilant even as we celebrate’ CNY: PM Lee

SINGAPORE has thus far maintained its Covid-19 posture even as it is watching external pandemic trends warily, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Saturday (Jan 21), as he called on Singaporeans to be vigilant as they celebrate the upcoming Chinese New Year (CNY).

“Thankfully, our own situation remains stable. But new variants may yet emerge somewhere that bring unexpected challenges,” he said. “Let us stay vigilant even as we celebrate.”

This may involve self-testing when needed, staying home if one feels unwell, and keeping vaccinations up-to-date, Lee said in a message to Singaporeans on the eve of the festive season.

Still, he said he is glad Singaporeans can fully resume their CNY celebrations this year after nearly three years battling the pandemic.

At the same time, the prime minister urged Singaporeans not to forget the hard work and sacrifices of those fighting at the frontline against Covid-19 and “keeping Singapore going”.

Lee also hinted at further government support in the coming months to help parents manage the pressures of raising children and “giving each child a good start”.

Families are at the core of Singapore’s social compact, he noted, adding that Singaporeans’ shared Covid-19 experience has made many people appreciate their families and loved ones better.

With 2022 dedicated as the “Year of Celebrating SG families”, the government last year introduced plans for “A Singapore Made for Families 2025” with initiatives to catalyse the whole of society to support families through all phases of life, he pointed out.

“Even though our TFR (total fertility rate) dipped last year, I am heartened that many young people still see marriage and parenthood as important life goals,” Lee said.

Noting that fees at government-supported pre-schools have been lowered in January, he added: “Further changes will be announced in the coming months. So to all our couples, do your best in this Year of the Rabbit!”

The prime minister also wished all Singaporeans good health and a very happy Chinese New Year.
