THE Republic is stepping up its efforts to realise its grand ambitions of becoming the world's first smart nation. By end of 2015, you may be seeing video sensors in Little India for safety and security considerations, flood-control water sensors at the Singapore River, as well as wireless internet access in Orchard and Chinatown.

On Friday, feeling the heat to satisfy immediate needs, the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) announced its plans to roll out calls for tender from Singapore-based enterprises by year's end to provide enhanced wired and wireless connectivity for sensors at high-traffic areas in Singapore, under the first phase of its Smart Nation Platform (SNP) project.
