Tokyo: Stocks open lower after New Year's holiday

[TOKYO] Tokyo stocks opened lower on a stronger yen Monday, as trading resumed for the first time after the New Year's holiday.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange fell 1.13 per cent, or 215.13 points, to 18,818.58 in opening deals, while the broader Topix index of all first-section shares dropped 0.95 per cent, or 14.77 points, to 1,532.53.
