US: Stocks open down 1.4% joining global rout

[NEW YORK] US stocks fell about 1.4 per cent in opening trade Wednesday, joining a rout in Asia and Europe prompted by sliding oil prices and worries about a weakening global economy.

About five minutes into trade, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index were down 1.4 per cent, while the S&P 500 dropped 1.3 per cent.
