A Galaxy and three constellations

THE specification is dead. That is, except in the world of Android phones, where megapixels and megahertz remain core marketing ammunition.

Samsung is as guilty as any manufacturer of perpetuating the spec war, having been the first to introduce an eight-core phone with the Galaxy S4 last year. It's ironic then that its latest flagship, the Galaxy S5, hasn't received its due because of spec fixation.

The S5 has the best AMOLED screen I've seen. It helps that it's of the Super AMOLED variety, which tends to have better colour accuracy than run-of-the-mill AMOLED. But the 5.1-inch S5 touchscreen is a massive leap beyond even Super standards. AMOLEDs tend to display cloyingly oversaturated colours. But the S5 nails it, without sacrificing the inky blacks and vibrant contrast that are AMOLED hallmarks.
