Eric Schmidt stepping down as chairman of Alphabet board

62-year-old's stint as executive chairman of Google's parent company to end next month; he had joined the company 17 years ago

GOOGLE'S parent company Alphabet on Thursday announced that Eric Schmidt will step down as chairman, remaining on the board but shifting into a role as a technical adviser.

"In recent years, I've been spending a lot of my time on science and technology issues, and philanthropy, and I plan to expand that work," Mr Schmidt said in a release.
