THE MOMENT YOU STEP into the lobby of this historic building along Stamford Road, you are cocooned in plush surroundings. It feels like a calming sanctuary, a world away from the throbbing buzz of traffic outside.

Formerly known as Capitol Building and Stamford House, this beautifully restored property today houses The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore.

Opened in late 2018, the luxury hotel evokes a touch of grandeur and sophistication. The architects and designers have retained the structure's colonial art deco and Victorian aesthetics while weaving in contemporary elegance.

LUXE STAYCATION

There are about 50 unique room configurations, designed to work cohesively within these conservation structures. Take your time to appreciate the original corniced ceilings and dramatic archways found in the 157 guestrooms and suites. The well-conserved French windows allow natural light to stream in.

In all eight room categories, guests can enjoy spacious living spaces, lofty ceilings, a luxurious bathroom with free-standing, deep-soaking bath, Sonos audio system, and a sizeable work desk area. If you need to catch up on your emails or social media, complimentary WiFi is available. Thirsty? Help yourself to non-alcoholic beverages from the minibar. Guests staying in suites are offered complimentary daily gourmet breakfast to boot. Furthermore, regardless of the time of arrival, you can enjoy a full 24-hour stay. That means if you check in at 9pm, you'll get to stay till the following night at 9pm.

REST AND RELAX

To relax after a long day, take a dip in the outdoor saltwater relaxation pool. Those in need of the ultimate rejuvenation can book a treatment at the lavish spa. There, you will be pampered with modern therapies along with traditional Asian massages.

Try the unique Singapore Massage, which features traditional Chinese, Malay and Indian techniques working in unison to melt all your stress and aches away. For even more privacy, in-room spa treatments are available too. WINE AND DINE

Dining options at the Kempinski are endless. Enjoy a hearty breakfast of warm toast, eggs Benedict, fluffy pancakes, and steaming hot dim sum, or a pleasant afternoon tea at the lobby lounge with your girlfriends. For the latter, you will be served an elegant three-tiered set with miniature sweet treats and savoury bites. Of course, you can also top up with some champagne.

At 15 Stamford by Alvin Leung, tuck into unique modern Asian dishes created by the Hong Kong-based chef of three Michelin-starred Bo Innovation.

Take, for instance, his version of Singapore laksa with creamy coconut milk broth. The huge bowl of rice noodles is laden with jasmine tea-smoked onsen quail eggs, housemade dried shrimp oil, shrimp floss and crunchy prawn tempura. Leung also adds his own unique tribute to bak kut teh by marinating a generously portioned pork chop with herbal spices, and chargrilling the meat till succulent and well-caramelised. It's served with compressed watermelon infused with angelica syrup and punchy herb-infused barbecue sauce.

End the day with post-dinner drinks or a nightcap at The Bar at 15 Stamford just next to the restaurant. Sip on a wide range of cocktail classics, or get the bartender to fix a bespoke one for you. The bar also specialises in 150 types of rum labels (pair them with dark chocolate if you like).

If you fancy authentic German fare, stroll over to Frieda at Capitol Piazza, where cold cuts, cheese, pork sausages, schnitzel and other robust dishes await. Linger over your meal with ice cold German beer on tap, or a glass of potent German liquor.
