THE company's name is not well known, but Dredging, Environmental and Marine Engineering (DEME) has played a key role in the growth of Singapore - literally.
The Belgian company, operating here through local subsidiary Dredging International Asia Pacific (DIAP), has reclaimed a significant portion of Singapore since the 1990s, adding space for industrial use in places such as Jurong Island and Tuas. It has also deepened channels for ships to pass through.
The company has been dominant in its niche, with few competitors. It is currently working on two big contracts with its partners: the S$1 billion westward extension of Jurong Island awarded in end-2013, and a S$2.4 billion deal to develop the first phase of the Tuas Terminal awarded earlier this year. Tuas is where Singapore will be consolidating its port operations.
