LTA awards 2 civil contracts worth S$861m for Cross Island Line Phase 1

THE Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded 2 civil contracts worth a combined value of S$861 million for the design and construction of the Hougang interchange station and tunnels, as part of Cross Island Line (CRL) Phase 1.

In a press statement released on Thursday (Jan 13), LTA said the first contract has been awarded to Hock Lian Seng Infrastructure, a subsidiary of mainboard-listed Hock Lian Seng Holdings, at a contract value of S$454 million, for the design and construction of the Serangoon North station and tunnels.

The Singapore-based construction company previously constructed the Kim Chuan Depot and Marina Bay station for the Circle Line, and is currently involved in the construction of Maxwell station along the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL), said LTA.

Shares of Hock Lian Seng J2T : J2T 0%were trading at S$0.24, up S$0.005 or 2.1 per cent, as at 10.58 am on Thursday after the announcement.

The second contract, which is for the design and construction of Tavistock station and tunnels, was awarded to Japanese company Sato Kogyo at a contract value of S$407 million.

According to LTA, Sato Kogyo has a "strong" track record of undertaking infrastructure, building and tunnelling projects in Singapore. The company constructed the Bencoolen and Mattar stations along Downtown Line, as well as the Upper Thomson station along TEL.

Construction works for the Serangoon North and Tavistock stations are expected to start in the second quarter of 2022, with passenger service for CRL Phase 1 slated to commence in 2030. The CRL Phase 1 is 29 kilometres long and comprises 12 stations from Aviation Park to Bright Hill.

The CRL is Singapore's eighth MRT line and will be constructed in 3 phases. Studies on the details of subsequent CRL phases are currently ongoing.
