The LG Signature OLED TV W takes TVs to new heights

Monday, May 22, 2017 - 00:00

The entertainment geeks and gadget fanciers among us might have caught the buzz around LG at consumer tech trade show CES 2017, which took place in Las Vegas earlier this year.

The South Korean brand snagged 54 awards at CES 2017, up from 23 last year. Of these, an impressive 45 awards went to their new LG Signature OLED TV W, making it quite the critics’ darling.

Recently launched in Singapore, the ultra-high-end 65” Signature OLED TV W retails at a cool $12,888, while the 77” version can be yours at $36,888. The price tags are not quite palatable for the average Joe, but true tech buffs will hardly be deterred.

Here are four ways the LG Signature OLED TV W stands out from the rest.

1. Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) technology

At the heart of the LG Signature OLED TV W lies OLED technology, this year’s game-changer for innovation in entertainment.

A conventional LCD/LED TV’s pixels are backlit whenever the unit is on. That means a “black” pixel is never truly black, resulting in unpleasantly low contrast and hard-to-discern details in dark scenes.

Due to its backlit screen, conventional TVs also suffer from excessively bright displays and oversaturated, unnatural colours. These little annoyances add up to a suboptimal entertainment experience.

Enter the LG OLED display. Each pixel is self-lighting, meaning it can turn on or off in accordance to the images displayed on screen.

A black pixel will be completely shut off; delivering a true black that is 200 times darker than the same on a conventional TV. Dark scenes are rendered perfectly, with no loss of detail.

OLED pixels also produce an impressive spectrum of a billion colours — 64 times more than what a conventional TV delivers. Expect realistic, rich, precise colours from the LG Signature OLED TV W’s Wide Colour Gamut technology.

In addition, LG OLED TVs maintain their picture quality and clarity at any viewing angle. All LG OLED TVs deliver a consistently spectacular picture, regardless of where you are seated in the room — ideal for families, friends and even multitasking.

2. Picture-on-Wall design

Here is where it gets really interesting for design enthusiasts. OLED technology actually makes it possible for a revolution in TV design.

At 2.57mm thin — picture 2 S$1 coins stacked together — the LG Signature OLED TV W boasts the world’s slimmest display panel. It is even flexible (although it can only be mounted on a flat surface).

In contrast, the absolute thinnest a high-end conventional LCD / LED TV can go is 4.5mm. That’s because they have LED-lit modules behind layers of panels, which OLED self-lighting pixels do away with.

Minimalist, elegant and seamless, the LG Signature OLED TV W is an art piece in and of itself, like a massive picture hanging on your wall.

That stripped-down aesthetic bears out in the TV’s design details. The edges of the display panel are minimised and messy cables eliminated thanks to an all-in-one universal cable strip. In other words, LG has removed every part of a television that would detract from your cinematic experience.

3. Dynamically enhanced images and Dolby Atmos Surround sound

High Dynamic Range imaging (HDR) is an extremely important technology that reveals a higher range of colours and contrast, creating a sense of true depth.

The LG Signature OLED TV W takes HDR technology further with its Active HDR. This dynamic HDR is mastered by cinema-standard Dolby Vision, which dynamically optimises brightness and contrast in each and every scene.

This is a huge improvement on the generic HDR 10, which only supports one adjustment throughout a standard two-hour movie.

Apart from Dolby Vision, LG’s 2017 OLED TV also supports the standard HDR 10, Hybrid Gamma Log (HLG) and HDR effect (which “upgrades” Standard Dynamic Range content into HDR-like content).

As for sound, the LG Signature OLED TV W sets the bar high with an in-box 4.2ch Dolby Atmos sound bar to deliver 360-degree surround sound. It also delivers object-based sound, detecting up to 128 different objects in any one scene to recreate a soundscape with a true sense of depth and space.

With its upwards-firing speakers, LG’s premium sound bar creates expansive overhead audio that utilises the acoustics of the space, transforming your home into a cinema.

4. A world of content at your fingertips

With the sheer variety of entertainment providers to choose from — from Netflix to YouTube — the last thing we want is for our options to be limited.

The LG Signature OLED TV W houses the webOS 3.5 smart interface, which allows you to navigate through all your entertainment options with ease.

As the latest iteration of the webOS operating system, it has been refined to provide instant access to everything you need. The Magic Link brings up a bar with all your options, including streaming services and television channels.

LG’s Magic Remote is also a joy to use, with voice search functions, zooming and recording features as well as quick-access buttons to your favourite entertainment sources.

The LG signature OLED TV W is a Netflix Recommended TV, meaning it is optimised for the ultimate Netflix viewing experience. Press the Netflix hot key on the Magic Remote to launch the streaming service immediately, where a range of content is available in stunning 4K HDR formats.
