GIC, Gentari and Greenko founders to produce and export green ammonia by 2025
GIC has teamed up with Gentari in Malaysia and the founders of India’s Greenko Group to produce five million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green ammonia, or about one MTPA of green hydrogen, by 2030.
This is equal to a fifth of India’s target for green hydrogen production, and about 10 per cent of Europe’s target for green hydrogen imports by 2030.
Definitive agreements were signed on Monday (Oct 30) between an affiliate of GIC; Gentari, the clean energy unit of Petronas; and AM Green, which is wholly owned and controlled by the founders of Hyderabad-based Greenko Group.
Under the partnership, green ammonia will be produced by AM Green’s unit, AM Green Ammonia, across multiple locations in India.
AM Green Ammonia will become a fully funded platform following investments from Gentari, GIC and AM Green.
Exports of green ammonia from the platform to key Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) markets – such as Germany, Japan, South Korea and Singapore – are expected to begin in late 2025.

Production of the green ammonia will be supported by renewable energy supplied via offtake agreements with counterparties, as well as electrolysers manufactured by another unit of AM Green.
About 6.5 GW of electrolysers are expected to be supplied to AM Green Ammonia by 2030 under AM Green’s joint venture with John Cockerill, a mechanical engineering company in Belgium.
AM Green Ammonia will also invest, in phases, in the Indian regions of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh.
“This strategic partnership will work to accelerate net-zero targets of various industries and several OECD economies,” said Anil Chalamalasetty, co-founder of Greenko Group and AM Green.
Added Gentari chief executive Sushil Purohit: “In OECD, South-east and East Asian economies, green ammonia will address the decarbonisation of industries such as power generation, through co-firing, as well as shipping.”
