BT’s Yong Jun Yuan wins Most Promising Journalist of the Year award

THE Business Times (BT) journalist Yong Jun Yuan has been recognised for his work in financial journalism at the Securities Investors Association (Singapore) (Sias) Investors’ Choice Awards 2023.

He was one of two recipients of the Most Promising Journalist of the Year award on Wednesday (Nov 8). The other was Lianhe Zaobao business journalist Wee Xiu Hooi.

Yong bagged the award for highlighting investing opportunities and trends in the market through his reports, as well as for his “Making Bank” column, which focuses on financial issues among young adults.

Sias president David Gerald said Yong had brought important investment issues to light through his reporting, such as the importance of continuing to invest in equities, even as interest rates make fixed-income products more attractive.

“You were able to generate your own ideas for this column ‘Making Bank’, which covers topics that are useful and of interest to readers in your age group. You certainly deserve this prestigious award as the Most Promising Journalist of the Year, in helping the investing community make an informed decision,” said Gerald.

BT editor Chen Huifen said the team is proud of Yong’s win.

“From telco and construction sectors, to digital payments and personal finance for young people, Jun Yuan is known in the newsroom to be the versatile journalist who can tackle a broad spectrum of subjects.

“This is also why he has been given the opportunity to helm BT’s ‘Making Bank’ column, where he covers money and investment-related topics for Gen Z. He is a role model for his peers,” she said.

Said Yong: “Personal finance is something that youth like myself should think about from the day we earn our first pay cheque. I hope the column inspires more people to start their investing journeys as early as possible.”

Other journalists from SPH Media Trust (SMT) also bagged awards for financial journalism at the event.

Chew Boon Leong, associate business editor at Lianhe Zaobao, won an award for the Financial Story of the Year; while The Straits Times senior correspondent Chor Khieng Yuit bagged the award for Financial Journalist of the Year. Lee Su Shyan, associate editor at The Straits Times, was named Investor Education Journalist of the Year.

Outside of SMT, Goola Warden and Jovi Ho from The Edge Singapore won for Financial Story of the Year.

Andrea Heng, a presenter at radio station CNA938, was awarded the Investor Education Journalist of the Year. CNA’s current affairs show Talking Point received a Special Award, while its Money Mind show won an award for Media Excellence in Community Investor Education.

In all, 12 individuals and 46 corporates were presented with awards in seven awards categories. Awards were also presented for corporate governance, shareholder communications and transparency; and to the best chief executives and best retail brokers.

This year, Sias also introduced a new corporate sustainability award to recognise “corporate sustainability practices that encapsulate both quantitative and qualitative indicators of success”.

The annual award is presented across four categories: big-caps, mid-caps, small-caps, and real estate investment trusts (Reits) and business trusts.

Winners of the inaugural award were DBS, UOB, Keppel Corp and Yanlord Land Group in the big-cap category; SBS Transit and China Everbright Water in the mid-cap category; and GSS Energy and SUTL Enterprise in the small-cap category. Mapletree Logistics Trust and Parkway Life Reit won in the Reits and business trust category.
