Beijing clears two top HK officials to enter chief exec race

HONG KONG'S former No. 2 and No. 3 officials have been given the all-clear to enter the March 26 election for the city's next leader.
China's central government yesterday announced approval of the resignations of Hong Kong Chief Secretary Carrie Lam and Financial Secretary John Tsang, which means both can now contend for the position of Hong Kong Chief Executive.
Chinese state-run news agency Xinhua yesterday reported the State Council's announcement of replacements for Mr Tsang and Mrs Lam's vacated positions, sealing approval of the resignations handed in on Dec 12 and Jan 12 respectively.
