China plenum to open with rumours Xi won't name successor

Mr Xi (above) appears to be China's strongest leader since Mao Zedong. An official newspaper has called him a "core" leader and said that China needed a Mao-style leader to face future challenges.


CHINA'S plenum of the Central Committee is opening on Monday amid rumours that President and Communist Party of China leader Xi Jinping might not step down after his second term, hence breaking a tradition imposed by his predecessors.
