[SINGAPORE] In one of the tightest races seen in the 2015 General Election, the People's Action Party's (PAP's) Charles Chong has managed to wrest the Punggol East single-member constituency (SMC) seat from the incumbent Workers' Party's (WP's) Lee Li Lian by a hair's breath.

He won 51.76 per cent of the vote share, 1,156 votes more than the 48.24 per cent received by Ms Lee.

The SMC has 34,466 residents registered in the ward.

Ms Lee, 37, had first won the seat in a four-cornered fight in the 2013 by-election, which included the PAP's first-time candidate Koh Poh Koon.

The by-election took place after former parliament speaker Michael Palmer was forced to step down.

Ms Lee garnered a narrow win of 54.5 per cent of the vote share then.
