HONG KONG needs to choose between having an election in 2017 or abandoning it, Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying said in his first major address after almost three months of pro-democracy protests divided the city.
The city cannot deviate from the Basic Law, the de facto constitution, which states that the chief executive for the election should be vetted by a nominating committee, Mr Leung said. Students, who had led the demonstrations, need to be guided to understand the relationship between China and Hong Kong, he said.
