Shanmugam to attend Johor Sultan coronation (Amended)
Singapore
MINISTER for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam, together with his wife Dr Seetha Shanmugam, are visiting Johor on Monday to attend the coronation of the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, 56.
They will attend the coronation ceremony in the morning, said a press statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. "The coronation is a historic event for Johor and is steeped in Johor's royal traditions," it said.
Mr Shanmugam's visit "reflects the warm relationship and close friendship between Singapore and Johor".
Johor's first royal coronation in 55 years will be celebrated with street parades, fireworks and four days of free concerts at Danga Bay.
A public holiday in the state has been declared. Sultan Ibrahim ascended the throne in 2010. He has said that the delay for his coronation was because he felt no need to rush, and the places for the coronation had to be refurbished.
AMENDMENT: The article originally stated that Mr Shanmugam and Dr Seetha will attend the coronation ceremony in the morning and the Royal Banquet the same evening. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has in an update on Monday, March 23, said that they will not be attending the Royal Banquet. The article has been amended to reflect that.
