Income tax relief cap stirs debate on fairness

Some wonder if it will discourage high-income women from having children, while others note the move won't affect most people

THE government's move to cap personal income tax relief at S$80,000 stirred a debate over whether it is fair, given how high-income working mothers will end up paying more tax.

Audit and advisory consultants argued that the government's social objectives on encouraging women to have more children were compromised. However, some among the 10 women interviewed by The Business Times refuted the idea, noting that a woman does not have more or fewer children based on the tax reliefs on offer.
