Singapore Budget 2018: S$200m per year to increase support for education
SINGAPORE will spend close to S$200 million a year on schemes to increase support for education, Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat said on Monday.
He said the government will increase the annual Edusave contributions from S$200 to S$230 for each primary school student, and from S$240 to S$290 for each secondary school student. This will take effect from January 2019.
The government will also update the income eligibility criteria for the Edusave Merit Bursary and the Independent School Bursary, to benefit more students from lower- to middle- income families.
The bursary quantum for pre-university students will be raised from S$750 to S$900, along with more meals cover for secondary school students under the School Meals Programme.
Students in special education schools will also benefit from these enhancement, Mr Heng said.
