[SINGAPORE] Hougang's incumbent member of parliament Png Eng Huat from the Workers' Party (WP) retained his seat in the single member constituency with 57.69 per cent of the vote.

His winning margin this round, however, narrowed from the 62.1 per cent vote he garnered in the 2012 by-election.

Contending candidate Lee Hong Chuang from the People's Action Party (PAP) lost out with 42.31 per cent of the votes.

A total of 22,555 valid votes were cast for Hougang SMC, of which 13,012 votes went to Mr Png.

The WP has held Hougang SMC since 1991, when party chief Low Thia Khiang wrested it from the PAP. In the 2011 polls, WP retained the seat, winning 64.8 per cent of the vote.

A subsequent by-election in 2012 - after member of parliament Yaw Shin Leong was sacked by the WP over his silence in an alleged extramarital affair - saw Mr Png triumping over PAP's Desmond Choo with 62.1 per cent of the votes.
