THE US and Japan launched their first regular "economic dialogue" in Tokyo on Tuesday amid signs of impatience on Washington's part for a trade agreement with Japan that will provide a model for the kind of bilateral deals President Donald Trump prefers over multilateral pacts.
"Mr Trump envisioned this as a mechanism for enhancing bilateral commercial relations between the US and Japan, and achieving results in the near future," US Vice-President Mike Pence told Japan's finance minister Taro Aso at the dialogues.
